As the CEO and founder my responsibilities have to do with pretty much everything in the company. From securing funding to internal operations to securing partnerships and customer acquisition, no task is beyond the boundaries of my responsibilities. My average work day involves doing legal work, finding the right partners to help us excel, overseeing product development and maintaining a positive team dynamic, which is my most important task. Through my past experience with finding a social innovation start-up (Pak-Story), being the Vice President at Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, and being a part of the varsity rugby team at University of Waterloo, I have developed a great extent of interpersonal skills which have allowed me to be leader for this team. Growing up, I attended 12 different schools, which assisted me in developing my social skills in the process of adapting to different environments. What I envision from this company is continued leadership towards the innovation of the best practices regarding safety worldwide. I believe that every goal you set is achievable if you are persistent with your effort, and intelligent with your resourcefulness.
As Chief Financial Officer of Guard-Ex, I am primarily responsible for finance and accounting related activities. This includes but not limited to day-to-day banking activities, bookkeeping, maintaining CRA standards, strategic partnerships, SR-ED filing and financing rounds. As a determined founder, I am consistently mirroring a lead role for a variety of other departments including Operations and Human Resources. I develop plans and strategies to ensure research, product development & talent acquisition are planned consistently to feasibly be aligned for financial execution. Moreover, I take a strong stand for recruiting and selecting talent. I am responsible for accurately assessing talent gaps and ethically execute employment agreements. All that being said — since the establishment of our startup, the entire founding team is determined to make a difference and honestly believe that nothing is impossible. Any task can be completed if an individual is adamant to achieving their fixed goals — considering the amount of resources and educational institutions within our fingertips.
I am a self-driven entrepreneur, capitalizing on research opportunities to help build strong correlations with the scientific and business goals of Guard-Ex. As the Chief Research Officer, I am responsible for all research conducted including concept validation, product testing/certifications, validation trials, and ensuring that our product development team is moving towards the right direction. I work with new employees to transition a smoother intake and help them better understand our goals with consistent high-level updates. I explore different research questions that may arise along the way and provide information in regards to expansion. Moreover, I take a large role in managing our validation studies to solidify our concept and explore new patterns. I work hand in hand with doctors as we explore scientific changes to product development. Lastly, I ensure the research and follow through is aligned with our ethics proposals by working closely with the Ethics & Regulatory Affairs department.
As Chief Marketing Officer at Guard-Ex, I lead the company’s marketing initiatives and conduct external/internal analysis on an ongoing basis. My responsibility is to implement and execute optimal strategies in consideration of all factors and our mission statement across appropriate channels. I strongly believe in our company’s vision to offer the golden standards to screen for impairment. I am constantly striving to hold our position as market leaders while overlooking the company’s plans on customer feedback and public relations. With an Honours BBA from the Lazaridis School of Business & Economics and significant entrepreneurial experience, I have garnered an acumen for business which has prepared me for my goal at Guard-Ex.
Converting ideas into reality using cutting edge technology. As the Data Analyst, I am responsible for processing data and generating useful insights. I work on machine learning algorithms which optimize the accuracy of the final test results. Moreover, on a day to day basis, I work along a team of highly qualified doctors to understand and interpret patterns within our data for validation studies. Additionally, I ensure the transfer of raw data collected by the device is accurate, precise and able to be interpreted by the end user.
As a Data Scientist, I am responsible for exploring and implementing new and cutting-edge AI technologies into our products. I have a passion for the new machine learning revolution and its incredible potential. With my background in mathematics and computers, I bring a unique experience to the team to help oversee software and hardware development. I worked in academia for over 10 years so now working with the Research Team at Guard-Ex, we strive to ensure our products exceed scientific and medical standards. With automation and AI, our products have potential for high-accuracy impairment screening which exceed human capabilities. I enjoy spending time with my family and also believe that work/life balance is very important.
Robert Schlegel is a proud founder of Wilfrid Laurier’s Schlegel Centre of Entrepreneurship & Social Innovation. He is also the founder & CEO of both, Bedrock Freight Logistics and Pavestone Co. LP. B located in Dallas.
R. Larry Gravill is a former Waterloo Regional Chief who served as Chief for 15 years. Larry graduated from FBI Academy and is an active member for the Canadian Association Chiefs of Police.
Dr. Jeffery Jones is the associate vice-president research at Wilfrid Laurier University. He is also director of the Laurier Centre for Cognitive Neuroscience, and the graduate coordinator of Laurier’s Cognitive and Behavioural Neuroscience stream in Psychology.
